“The Hale House is a charming, inviting venue surrounded by gorgeous landscapes. The property managers were attentive and responsive while giving us space to pursue our own activities. The on-site chef prepared the most delicious meals and the staff provided superb dining set-up and clean-up. We had an exceptional time reliving old Balsams memories and we would highly recommend staying at this property.”

“This home was amazing and had all the amenities. Very spacious for our whole family. Hannah was wonderful to work with. The scenery, fire pit, grill, large family living and dining areas, many bedrooms (with individual bathrooms), kayaks, fun games and stocked kitchen were perfect. Our family had a blast! Thank you!”

“We had taken numerous family vacations to the Balsams over the years as our children grew up, so this was a remarkable and emotional experience to be able to return to Dixville Notch, stay at the Hale House, walk the resort’s grounds, enjoy Lake Gloriette, and play golf on the Panorama course.

All of us felt quite nostalgic returning after ten years. It was also an opportunity for our daughters-in-law to see The Balsams for the first time and appreciate what we had experienced for many years.”

“We searched for a space in which our extended family could hang out together, hike, explore, golf, play games: The Tillotson House in The Balsams Resorts was perfect.  The private, spacious, mid-century home with fresh, modern decor provided a lively backdrop for us to do it all!   Having access to a panoramic golf course and a lake with canoes and kayaks, a fire pit for S’mores, indoor Skee-Ball and Foos-Ball, and trails and treks nearby allowed a myriad of choices for us.  In addition, I appreciated the attention to detail given to the coordination of colors in the kitchen, from dishes to implements, and the nice quality cookware…everything that a large family needs was there. What a treasure this house is!  We made a million great memories.”

“Thank you for working with us to make our stay wonderful.  We enjoyed the chairs by the lake and the boats were a huge hit after the hike to Table Rock.  You did a wonderful job equipping the house and kitchen!”

“From the time you met us at the gate upon our arrival and led us to the Hale House, until the time we finished another great breakfast and sadly had to leave three days later, there was never a doubt that we had made a wise decision by choosing the Hale House as our destination for the weekend. The house itself is not only very historical due to its storied past and all the pictures of the dignitaries adorning the walls, but the setting is breathtaking, as it sits at the base of Dixville Notch and on the edge of Lake Gloriette. The rooms were simple but very pleasant and the house itself just oozed the feeling of homey, comfortable and just plain cool.

Then there’s the ‘meal plan’ that was part of the package. This meal plan was essential since there is absolutely nothing else around other than a 15-minute drive into Colebrook. However, chef Gordon and his staff were simply awesome. Not only was the food amazing, but they were all just great folks, as genuinely interested in us as we were in them. Getting fed three meals a day at our own dining room table was a real treat and one of the features of a stay at the Hale House that makes it special.

We skied right out of our door, snow-shoed up to Table rock just across the way and all around Lake Gloriette, as we had the entire property at our disposal since we were basically the only people on the property except for Gordon and his small crew. There were six of us for the weekend and the place was more than comfortable for us, and we remarked that one more couple would be fine in the wintertime, whereas the summertime roster could easily be 10 -12 folks since there is so much ‘outdoors’ to behold at this place.

We all loved our stay at the Hale House and highly recommend it to any couples, families and friends who appreciate the solitude and beauty of these surroundings while being fed like a king the entire time. I’m sure we’ll be back!”

“We were in Dixville Notch staying at Hale House to celebrate our daughter and new son-in-laws wedding. From the time of our first inquiries till our goodbyes everyone was friendly, helpful, and answered all of our questions. We couldn’t have made a better choice. The setting was spectacular for an outdoor wedding.

Chef Gordon went out of his way to accommodate all our requests. From the beautiful salumi formaggi board to the delicious Osso Bucco to amazing fruit tarts and everything in between, we enjoyed it all. We were treated to freshly baked bread and homemade cookies and muffins.

We spent as much time as we could outside enjoying the snow and scenery. The snowshoeing was incredibly good. We were sad to leave such an enchanting place and hope to return again.”

“We had a wonderful time. It was a great experience and brought back many fond memories of when the kids were younger at the Balsams. I must say that the quality of the food and service was outstanding, so kudos to Gordon and the team. I had brought a book with me but it saw little daylight as we spent one day hiking up around the golf course, one day snow mobiling through the beautiful trails of the north woods, one day in the backyard acting like little kids building a snow man, forts and having snowball fights and the final day snowshoeing on the foot and a half of fresh powder.

Being that we had 5 kids between the ages of 18 and 25 with us there was no shortage of energy so the fire pit was sparked up each day as the sun went down and board games followed soon thereafter. One of the more wonderful surprises was how great it was to have our dog Jake with us. It was awesome to watch him to run around and explore all the beauty of nature with us while we hiked and snowshoed.

I know it takes a lot of effort to make such a wonderful experience possible so please pass on our thanks.”

“Thanks to you and the Balsams Team for the hospitality provided while staying at Hale House at The Balsams.

As innkeepers of a historic home ourselves, we truly appreciated the history of Hale House.  It feels like you are stepping back in time.  The home is so spacious and relaxing and I will admit to taking at least 4 naps while relaxing with our covid bubble family.

We also took advantage of the vast space.  We sledded, snowshoed, hiked and even enjoyed an outside fire.  The fresh 8 inches of snow while we were there was sooooooo pretty, picture perfect actually.”

“The Hale House is a great family/friends wilderness getaway where our nine family members were able to create a memorable holiday experience.

The historic home is rustic, spacious, and homey and sits on a lake.  We had the house to ourselves, but there is staff on the property round the clock readily available for help or questions.  We had our own private chef so we didn’t have to give meals a second thought. They were able to accommodate all our food requests and restrictions. All the meals were awesome – fresh, abundant, with plenty of choices –  and we are pretty particular foodies!!   Chef Gordon also made freshly baked snacks for us to take on our hike up to Table Rock one morning. One afternoon we had a target shooting contest on the property.  We also liked the BYOB policy as it made it fun and easy for everyone to have their desired beverages.  We made a fire outside in the evening where we enjoyed some pre-dinner cocktails and apps. After dinner, there was plenty of room to spread out in the living area, where we exchanged Secret Santa, played games and cards, and set up ping pong in the screened in porch. A few miles up the road in the town of Errol, we discovered LL Cote’s – an old-fashioned general store on steroids where we all shopped for our Secret Santa gifts. We were hoping to snowshoe and hike some more of the many scenic trails but we ran out of time!  And when it was time to check out, Chef Gordon had extra croissants for us for the ride home. We really had an amazing couple of days (including our dog!) and hope to revisit in the future.”
