Built in 1912, The Balsams Panorama Golf Course, a Donald Ross signature design, is a legendary 18 hole, par 72 course, consistently ranked as the best in the state by Golf Digest. Founded in 1866 as the Dix House, The Balsams was originally a small summer inn for weary Victorian travelers traversing the White Mountains, who discovered immense beauty, solace and wonder. By the time the Hale House was added in 1895, well-heeled executives and their families arrived by railroad and were so enchanted by the resort, they would stay for months at a time. Over the course of a century, and with the construction of the Hampshire House in 1916, The Balsams had grown to a resplendent 400 room grand resort.

EVERY FOUR YEARS THE EYES OF THE NATION TURN OUR WAY.
For half a century, The Balsams’ historic Ballot Room has served as the polling place for the nearly two dozen residents of Dixville Notch who are among the first in the nation to vote in Presidential elections. A long-held tradition, the voters gather to cast their secret ballots when the polls first open at midnight. Minutes later, the results are announced to the state and the nation.
